The project

Description of the project

The ideology of the project is statement, that as a result of weathering processes in soil skeleton there are changes in its outer layers (more weathered skeleton coat bigger changes), which provides to change of characteristic of those layers. In basis of elaborated methodology this way of thinking has been reversed to following one: changes of characteristic of consecutive layers of the skeleton according to unweathered particles of soil core, show degree of weathering. This assumption allows to search the way of mechanical split the weathered layers of the skeleton in the subject of its resistance for abrasion. In the framework of this project it is proposed to use laboratory method of self-abrasion of soil skeleton to determine rate of erosion processes that take place in the bed of the mountain stream. Examine of the self-abrasion will be performed in apparatus constructed specially to this purpose basing on authorship research methodology. In case of verification of proposed research method it is possible to forecasting and prevent erosion phenomena, also at large area approach.

Why is the project needed?

Water erosion in mountainous areas is a natural process, and still not much is known about its characteristics. Without doubt, it is a phenomenon not beneficial to the natural environment, due to e.g. translocation of rock masses, resulting from hydrological events that are impossible to be predicted. Erosion processes occurring in creeks may cause measurable damages in technical infrastructure in valleys (slope roads, communication facilities), and, in case of landslides, they reduce the size of forest production areas. In the long run, they lead to changes in valley morphologies. Prevention of these events requires, first of all, sufficient knowledge concerning the dynamics of erosion processes.

What is the objective of the project?

The objective of the project is test of laboratory research method of rock material self abrasion, which is part of patent, in order to predict pace of erosion process in mountain streams.

Expected project results

It seems that the ability to find interrelations that could be described by mathematical formulae, between abrasion ability of rock formations and the intensity of erosion processes will enable a description of this phenomenon with a satisfactory accuracy. The developed formulae may directly impact the possibility to forecast erosion events in the creek, and in consequence in valley transformation and occurrence of landslides.
The verification of the applied research methodology will constitute the basis for further research in this field. In a further perspective, the conducted research will result in broadening of knowledge about the dynamics in natural fluvial and erosion processes, which have crucial significance for the natural environment in respect of land eco-system formation.
